Tekee Media to Timor in July

Ros is going to Timor Leste in July to continue work on the recording of the Traditional Music of Timor Leste.  The Tekee Tokee Music Project has good examples of Traditional Music from 10 of the 13 districts now.  In August of 2007 the ABC did a feature program on the traditional Music in a program “A Musical Tais”, produced by Robyn Ravlich.  Therese Virtue of Boite in Melbourne and Thursday’s Children (a choir) were impressed by the program and have made a generous donation so that the project can continue to record the traditional music of the remaining districts.  The recordings this trip  will be from the Bobonaro and Liquica districts of Timor Leste,  it will no doubt be an interesting trip full of anecdotes and adventure.  We shall keep you posted.  The photos below are from the previous recording trip which was in the  Mt. Ramelau region of Timor, with photos of a small village near Hatobiliko (at the foot of Mt Ramelau) and from Mount Ramelau itself. It is not a difficult ascent to the summit,  but if you leave before dawn  (the night photo is a silouette of Mt Ramelau) spectacular views of all of Timor can be seen from the summit of the mountain, the Statue of The Virgin Mary was carried up the mountain by the Timorese, at the top of the Mountain it is freezing cold and usually a strong wind blows!

The year 11 group of this school actively raise funds to help the high school of Maliana, in Timor Leste. Through the project the students develop a fantastic awareness of one of their nearest neighbours and come to realise how lucky and privileged their own lives are! The photo is of the teacher behind the project in Timor Wayne Collcott, with Ros Dunlop the presenter, Ros is dressed in the traditional dress for women. Great work for 3 years now by Sydney Secondary College.

The program promises to be diverse and James Kortum plays with Charisma in Wesley-Smith’s piece db the title referring to the Australian Composer Don Banks. Maria Regina Catholic School Independence Day Celebrations

Today May 20th celebrates 6 years of Independence and the birth of the Nation Timor Leste. Maria Regina Catholic School is another school embarking on the friendship schools program. They had day devoted to awareness about Timor Leste.  Tekee Tokee Tomak School Presentation was part of that.  The presentation was for the whole school,  from kindergarten to year 6.  Lots of stories, featuring of course the crocodile!  A lot of tais(timorese weavings) and knick knacks were sold, even Timorese Dolls made by women’s weaving groups in Timor.  All these sales go to helping these women sustain their families.  This little school is doing its bit to help Timor!  three cheers for the children of Maria Regina Catholic Primary School.  The feedback on the presentation was great,  they wished we had more time!  But….school ends at 3pm and so did the presentation!  If you want to book the presentation please go to the contacts page and send an email or phone us! Hope to hear from you soon!

Visit to East Timor - April for the purpose of establishing partnerships, etc for the music school Hadahur

Hello Everyone,

I am off to East Timor and Darwin tomorrow, to establish partnerships and hopefully commitment for a secure lockable place for the Music School in Dili we are helping to establish “Hadahur”. This is the first such music school for Dili, combining traditional music as well as western as the disciplines to be taught in the school. I hope to be able to post some photos shortly.

It is vital to the school that good support be developed in Darwin, through Charles Darwin University and Northern Territory Music Schools. We are hoping to secure financial support from companies involved in Timor, to help defray the costs of sending teachers on a regular basis from Darwin to Dili (teaching violin and guitar initially). This is a small start in what hopes to be a successful music school.

More Soon. If you have instruments, funds to donate, please go the the page on the site for Donations.

thanks

ros
